Background: Infection with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is one of the world’s biggest concerns, mobilizing large socio-economic resources. Current scientific knowledge allowed us an advance in the fight against HIV infection, which led to a reduction in the number of complications and an increase on the average life span. Objective: This shift of paradigm has as significant economic impact that is important for the proper construction of HIV prevention and treatment plans. Therefore, we conducted this investigation to determine the average monthly cost of a child infected with HIV type 1 (HIV-1), through the analysis of health costs associated with the follow up and treatment. Methods: The costs were estimated using data provided by the administration of Hospital Santa Maria – Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte, EPE (HSM-CHLN), from January 2015 to November 2016, regarding office visits, medications, laboratory analysis, hospital day care and hospitalizations. Results and Discussion: In the end, we estimated the average monthly cost of a child with HIV-1 in 661.18€ and we assume that this work contributes to a better understanding of the economic impact of this chronic disease.
