The purpose of this empirical study is to examine whether the strategy based on the resources pursued by clubs through the establishment of Academies of Football is linked to their sporting performance. To that end, this study is focused on the Academy Sporting/Puma and the Academy Football Club Barcelona - "La Masia". Additionally, the economic-financial impact of the Academy of Barcelona was analyzed taking into account the seasons 2001/02 to 2009/2010. The results were able to show us that the Academy of Barcelona is an important asset to the club. On one hand, the sporting results of the club in the Spanish Professional Football League are positively associated (0.797) to the proportion of players in the main squad trained at the Academy. On the other hand, taking into account the residual result and capital gains obtained from the sale of players, as well as the value of the passes of the academy trained players that make up the main, B and youth team, in the season 2009/2010, the Academy has allowed the club to generate 283MâŹ. According to this, the training of players in the Academy of Barcelona, whose âtalentsâ are considered rare, valuable and inimitable, is a source of sustained competitive advantage to the club. Following the research, there is a negative correlation (-0.299) between the sporting performance of the club (SCP) and the proportion of players in the main squad trained at the Academy Sporting/Puma. However, 49% of the SportingÂŽs Academy players have either a national or international career. Therefore, other skills developed at the Academy are enhanced, allowing young players to continue their sporting careers.
