Abstract(s)
The nature of the elements that constitute the city and the urban space - urban materials - as well as their spatial and functional organization, has been a central issue in the history of architecture and urbanism, evoking development models of societal organization. Since the end of the 19th century new materials have become part of the menu of construction of the contemporary urban space, introducing scales and morphological logics hitherto unknown. Taking the historic center of Pêro Pinheiro, in Sintra, more particularly the Pardal Monteiro Factory (former factory of cutting and transformation of natural stone) as an area of intervention, this work reflects on the dual-sided meaning of the urban matter, as on its reinvention. On the one hand, the proposal adopts the most elementary sense of the physical matter. Using stone as a basic material and constituent element, the elementary logic of architecture is questioned and stone is explored as a material of architectural composition and spatial and formal constitution. On the other hand, the proposal addresses the sense of urban morphology and the understanding of the city as a composite system whose form results from the composition of urban elements or materials, and uses the business area of Pêro Pinheiro as an emerging urban material of this new extensive and fragmentary city. The proposal aims to create a new center of innovation and research on stone w h i c h is the engine to explore architectural design as an elementary practice, be it at the urban scale or at the architectural scale. The research hypothesis reflects on the potential that elementary design theory and practice has to respond to a condition of complexity in the contemporary world.
