Funeral Architecture and Funerary Art are two aspects that are forgotten in the History of Portuguese Art. National Cemeteries and Cemetery Tourism are uncommon topics in our country, given the population's lack of knowledge and the lack of study – despite there being more – on this subject - nowadays. There are many symbolisms associated with ornaments and a kind of “emojis” from the past. Symbology is a vast field of different meanings and representations, referring to themes such as the deceased's professional life; to association groups – Freemasonry -; to religious symbols, emphasizing Christianity; to the flora, in which all types of flowers and plants are seen with the definition of longing and/or death; to fauna, in which you can observe the varieties of animals that portray the dark/night/death, etc. Many of these symbols began with their history in ancient times and over time they adapted to the meaning we give them today. Therefore, this report will be dedicated to the framing of what is defined as funeral symbolism and its impact on Portuguese cemeteries, in particular, on the Alto de São João cemetery in Lisbon
