Parvovirus B19 is a DNA virus identified only 40 years ago. The clinical features of the infection by this virus, ubiquitous in the human population, vary with the age and immunological state of the host. The clinical entities associated with this infection are erythema infectiosum in healthy children, arthralgias in adults, transient aplastic crisis in patients with an underlying haematological illness, hydrops fetalis in the fetus and chronic anaemia in the immunocompromised. In the last decades, other entities were proposed as being caused by parvovirus B19 infection, such as myocarditis and hepatitis. This review aims to approach the diseases that are well established as belonging to the spectrum of the clinical manifestations of parvovirus B19 infection and to briefly analyse those that have been associated to this virus in the previous years.
