On December 27, 1727, the Spanish Infanta Mariana Vitória de Bourbon married the Portuguese Prince Dom José. This union fulfilled the desire of the Iberian countries to reestablish strong family ties after several years of the Restoration Wars. Upon arriving in Portugal, the Princess of Brazil found herself surrounded by a large number of attendants, a group that grew even larger when she became queen consort in 1750, and again when her mother-in-law died in 1754. And it is precisely about the different offices that composed the Queen’s Household that this study intends to focus, studying them. The Household of D. Mariana Vitória de Bourbon (1718–1781). Spaces, Servants, and Patronage is our research topic, with the aim of identifying how these officials – both men and women – were connected through family ties, how they were positioned hierarchically within the institution, and which roles they had previously held, whether within this household or in other royal structures. In addition to exploring several areas of the Queen’s Household, we follow, first of all, the path taken by King José’s consorte, who, although not as well known as other queens, experienced decisive and significant moments in the History of Portugal throughout the 18h century.
