A correta identificação e descrição de lesões traumáticas por agentes externos mecânicos é uma função que qualquer médico deve ser capaz de desempenhar. No entanto, observa-se o uso incorreto da terminologia na prática clínica, mesmo nas lesões traumáticas mais comuns. Por forma a reunir e recapitular a informação sobre as características e classificação das lesões traumáticas por agentes externos mecânicos, é apresentada uma revisão bibliográfica do tema. Perante o padrão crescente do número de agressões e mortes com recurso a armas brancas, expõe-se de forma complementar uma revisão bibliográfica à epidemiologia das armas brancas, assim como aos padrões de lesão traumática, aos fatores relevantes à perfuração da pele, à distância a órgãos vitais e à biomecânica das agressões por esse tipo de arma.
A correct classification and assessment of an injury caused by the application of physical force is a skill that all physicians should be able to perform. However, quite often there is a misuse of the terminology of these injuries in the clinical setting, even with the most usual injuries. In order to gather and review the knowledge about assessment and classification of injuries caused by physical force, a review of the literature regarding this topic is presented. Concerning the increased incidence of assaults and fatalities by sharp force, it is also reviewed the epidemiology, wound patterns, relevant factors to the penetration of the skin, organ to skin distances and biomechanics regarding sharp force attacks.
