In many respects, the tasks proposed by the teacher conditionate the learning opportunities offered to students. Therefore, the choice of adequate tasks is one of the more important aspects of the teachers’ work. This paper argues about the need to distinguish between task and activity and presents several kinds of tasks characteristics of the discipline of mathematics: problems, exercises, investigations and explorations, as well as projects and modelling tasks. It contrasts these tasks in several dimensions such as their degree of structure, their degree of mathematical challenge, their duration and the underlying context, analysing their potentialities and their role in teaching and learning of mathematics.
