Através do folhetim – uma categoria jornalístico-literária indissociável da imprensa
periódica oitocentista –, procuramos nesta dissertação traçar um panorama do movimento
teatral de Lisboa entre os anos de 1850 e 1890. Para isso, recorremos aos folhetins de Júlio
César Machado, celebrado autor na época, particularmente os d’A Revolução de Setembro
e os do Diário de notícias. Tratando-se de uma figura muito ligada ao teatro – como
tradutor, dramaturgo, biógrafo e crítico –, revela-se um observador atento das
transformações que a sociedade sofre, bem como dos sinais de mudança nas correntes
artísticas. O olhar que Júlio César Machado lança sobre os espectáculos, os públicos, as
figuras de palco e a literatura dramática, transposto para as suas crónicas em folhetim, e
para a sua obra em geral, ergue-se, assim, como importante documento para a história do
teatro em Portugal.
ABSTRACT: The present dissertation intends to trace a wide view of Lisbon’s theatrical movement between 1850 and 1890, supported on the feuilleton, a journalistic/literary genre, highly related with the nineteenth century periodical press. In order to fulfil this purpose, we explore the feuilletons of Júlio César Machado, a renowned writer at that time, particularly those of the newspapers A Revolução de Setembro and Diário de Notícias. Being Machado a well known intellectual in the theatre scene as a translator, dramaturge, biographer and critic, he reveals himself a sharp observer of the social transformations as well as of the signs of change in the artistic streams. Júlio César Machado’s view on the shows, the audiences, the stage artists, and on the dramatic literature, documented in his chronicles and in his works in general, emerges as an important source of information for the history of the Portuguese Theatre.
