A investigação que se apresenta estuda a vida e obra do arquiteto Sebastião Formosinho Sanchez, posiciona-o no seu contexto histórico, recolhe, organiza, e reflete sobre a sua obra - escrita e projetada. Sendo Formosinho Sanchez um reconhecido arquiteto português - consequência da sua forma de estar perante a arquitetura, das inúmeras vezes que foi publicado, e da qualidade da sua obra - a investigação vem preencher a ausência de um estudo que reflita sobre a obra global do arquiteto, não tendo sido, até à data, objeto de estudo ou reflexão. Após o seu reconhecimento em variadíssimos estudos sobre a arquitetura moderna portuguesa (por autores de afirmado prestígio1), a carência de uma investigação regrada sobre a mesma tornou-se indispensável, a qual vem não só reconhecer, organizar e refletir, como também comunicar a sua arquitetura, sendo estes os principais objetivos da dissertação. Como metodologia, foi feita uma análise da arquitetura moderna em Portugal; foram realizadas entrevistas com aqueles que tinham algo a contar sobre a sua personalidade e obra; levou-se a cabo a procura, e o devido encontro, do Espólio de Sebastião Formosinho Sanchez2; foram analisados e digitalizados os seus escritos; listou-se a sua obra global, localizando-a no mapa de Portugal e dispondo-a temporalmente; prosseguiu-se com a visita às obras selecionadas, redesenho dos projetos, e encontro com fotografias contemporâneas das mesmas (maioritariamente através do arquivo da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian); finaliza-se a investigação com um estudo fundamento sobre as quatro obras selecionadas – são elas o Centro de Medicina de Reabilitação de Alcoitão, o Tribunal Judicial de Rio Maior, o Externato Diocesano D. Manuel de Mello, e a Casa Martins Correia. A dissertação, e principalmente a síntese final, fundamenta e confirma que Sebastião Formosinho Sanchez procurava a modernidade enquanto disciplina, participando ativamente no movimento moderno português.
The research presented here studies the life and work of the architect Sebastião Formosinho Sanchez, places him in his historical context, collects, organizes, and reflects on his work - written and projected. As Formosinho Sanchez is a renowned Portuguese architect - a consequence of his approach to architecture, the numerous times he has been published, and the quality of his work - thisresearch fills the gap in the absence of a study that reflects on the architect's overall work, which has not been the subject of study or reflection until today. After his recognition in numerous studies on modern Portuguese architecture (by prestigious authors3), the lack of regular research on this became indispensable, which not only recognizes, organizes, and reflects, but also communicates his architecture, which are the main objectives of this dissertation. As a methodology, a study was carried out on modern architecture in Portugal; interviews were conducted with those who had something to tell about his personality and work; Sebastião Formosinho Sanchez's estate was searched for and duly found4 ; his writings were analyzed and digitized; his overall work was listed, located on the map of Portugal and arranged temporally; the selected works were visited, the projects were redesigned and contemporary photographs were taken (mostly from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation archive); the research was concluded with a fundamental study of the four selected works - the Alcoitão Rehabilitation Medicine Centre, the Rio Maior Judicial Court, the D. Manuel Mello Diocesan School, and the Casa Martins Correia. The dissertation, and especially the final synthesis, substantiates and confirms that Sebastião Formosinho Sanchez sought modernity as a discipline, actively participating in the Portuguese modern movement.
