Esta dissertação tem como objetivo reunir e aprofundar o conhecimento já existente sobre a mulher como agente na assistência médica e à natalidade em Portugal desde a Época Medieval até à Época Moderna. Este conhecimento será enquadrado no contexto europeu através do recurso a estudos de referência. A divisão dos capítulos por épocas, desde a Antiguidade à Época Moderna, destina-se a contextualizar as bases do conhecimento científico e filosófico que influenciaram a medicina até ao final do século XVIII, além de colocar o papel da mulher na área da saúde em perspetiva, revelando o seu caráter minoritário e gradualmente restringido ao longo dos séculos. Por meio da análise de cartas régias, registos de batismos, processos do Santo Ofício e outros documentos, será possível aprofundar conhecimentos sobre o papel social destas mulheres nas suas comunidades e a forma como as instituições régias e eclesiásticas interagiam com as suas práticas.
This dissertation aims to gather and expand the existing knowledge on women as agents of medical and natal assistance in Portugal from the Middle Ages to the Modern Era. This knowledge will be framed within the European context through the analysis of referential studies. The division of chapters by historical era, from Antiquity to the Modern Age, is intended to contextualize the basis of the scientific and philosophical knowledge which influenced medicine until the end of the 18th century, as well as to provide perspective on the role of women in the field of health by revealing its minority and gradually restricted character. Through the analysis of royal charters, baptism registries, inquisitorial legal processes and other documents, it will be possible to deepen the knowledge of the role of these women in their communities and how royal and ecclesiastic institutions interacted with them.
