Abstract(s)

As part of the master's degree in Museology and Museography, this project analyses a remarkable collection of plasters created by the sculptor Alessandro Giusti in the eighteenth century, intended for the National Palace of Mafra. With the preservation of Portuguese heritage in mind, the goal is to connect the conservation of the pieces with the museological aspect through an exhibition proposal. Detailed cataloguing of this collection through diagnostic and pathological methods is crucial for its safeguarding. The study aims to understand better the sculptor's techniques and the influences of the prominent Mafra school of sculpture, which is inspired by the teachings of Italians in Rome. The analysis of Giusti's plaster altarpieces, the focal point of this work, requires an assessment of the value of the collection and the surrounding space. The materialization of this project includes, consequently, the presentation of an exhibition proposal at the Mafra Palace. The ideal exhibition conditions, room configuration, equipment, and choice of iconography will be explored. In addition, texts and dissemination strategies will be proposed to share with the public the vast collection of plaster altarpieces by one of the notable sculptors of the eighteenth century in the National Palace of Mafra
