The work in question corresponds to the proposal for a school building, intended for nursery, preschool, and primary education, in Cidade Universitária de Lisboa as an alternative to the current Kindergarten of Serviços de Ação Social da Universidade de Lisboa (SASUL). The proposal seeks to create a complex (building + outdoor space) in which the maximum number of recommendations and principles of “alternative” teaching methods are implemented, focusing on promoting children’s autonomy and the importance of play. The execution of the work required the search, selection, and characterization of plots of land, formulation of a functional program, study of alternative teaching methods and their architectural attributes, identification of relevant and significant case studies, and even interviews with experts in the field of education and child development. The designed complex was conceived to have an active role in the psychological, physical, and motor development of the child. The strong connection between the interior and exterior spaces was one of the working premises. The chosen theme stemmed from the desire to intersect two “worlds” in which the author operates: architecture and education. The interest in school architecture and a critical perspective on it, combined with contact with the world of education, led to this proposal of “Another Space to Grow.”
