| dc.description.abstract | This dissertation investigates the evolution of bandstands in public space and their presence of in city of Lisbon. The aim of this study is to know the importance they had in the past and the current uses of bandstands. To accomplish that, an analysis of city places and activities existing in public space is made, in order to know, in a second part of this work, the origin and evolution of the structure of the bandstand and its functional characteristics. Finally, a relationship is made between this analysis and the historical articles on the edification of bandstands in Lisbon, its local implementation and their uses. There were numerous temporary structures (armed bandstands) of different styles. Throughout history, twenty-two fixed bandstands of different formats, were built in the city, and they are eleven nowadays. The bandstands in Lisbon, armed and fixed, were used on festive, official or popular occasions, where a band was always present to enliven the event. The free concerts of classical music were a way to educate societies. In a time when there was still no radio, it was important to have places for daily meeting of people of all ages and statutes, with the purpose of listening to music and watching the bands through weekly concerts, where everyone could enjoy the space around the bandstand. Nowadays, in Lisbon, specific events are promoted in bandstands, different performances of several musical styles are presented. The events promoted in bandstands may represent a way to reinvent the past, looking ahead to a different future, avoiding the abandonment of bandstands.
