Abstract(s)
As
The aim of this study was to understand parenting practices, perceptions, challenges and dynamics of fathers and mothers in social practices of alternate residency in different social contexts and with different entry routes into that regime, due to a consensual decision and in alternate residency practices imposed by court, from the point of view of gender relations. A qualitative methodology was used, whereby 19 interviews were made to 13 mothers and 6 fathers, whose content was analysed with resource to category-based analysis. It can be observed that fathers and mothers connect alternate residency to the equitable division of parental responsibilities and to the right of the child to keep father and mother present in their life after their separation or divorce. Gender disparities between the parents with regard to their engagement in child care, as well as their division of the provision of care, strengthen the barriers in the access to alternate residency and in building a parental relation apart from the marital relationship. Parenting practices, perceptions and dynamics in alternate residency are subjected to the influence of gender beliefs and stereotypes. Simultaneously, gender relational processes and dynamics in course can be observed, which envision the social construction and deconstruction of paternity and maternity.
