Nail fungal infections : topical formulations for Onychomycosis

Onychomycosis affects about 15% of the population. This disease causes physical and psychosocial discomfort for infected patients. Oral therapy is sometimes inappropriate due to comorbidities and also in cases of less severe infection, topical treatment is required. Topical treatment for transungual drug delivery has low representativity in the market, mostly due to low success rates derived from poor ungual permeation. In this work onychomycosis, transungual permeation and permeation enhancers are overviewed. Available topical formulations are also addressed, such as creams, solutions, gels, colloidal carriers and with an emphasis on nail lacquers.
