Abstract(s)
The main goal of this research project was to understand in depth rituals among island and continental couples in two stages of the family life cycle, namely, couple formation and empty nest. A qualitative method was employed based on data collected through semi-structured interviews to twenty couples (N=40). The data collected were analysed with the software QSR Nvivo 12, through an inductive and deductive thematic analysis. The main results obtained show: (1) nineteen couples have rituals; 2) the most common type of couple rituals are couple-time rituals; 3) rituals function as a way of connecting and balancing the relationship of the couple; 4) through their rituals couples experience for the most part positive feelings; 5) couples stated that there is to a large extent a gender balance with regard to the investment and responsibility involved in defending rituals; 6) all couples who have rituals affirmed that these benefited the relationship with respect to satisfaction and quality; 7) the majority of couples indicated that their rituals have changed overtime; 8) distance, comfort and money are the major obstacles to building rituals; 9) proximity, effort/investment and money are its major promoters; 10) the geographic, cultural, family, financial and professional contexts influence ritual building, and 11) the interviews provided “therapeutic effects” for some couples. The most important conclusions obtained in this study are presented, including some of its limitations and potentialities as far as research and intervention in Psychology are concerned.
