The Portuguese economy shows a growing dependence on the tourism sector. In this sense, the overall objective of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of various Portuguese hotels using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology, a benchmarking technique often used to determine the efficiency of production systems. The DEA technique is a mathematical programming method that uses linear adjustment by data surface points to plot a non-parametric efficiency frontier, analyzing the optimal combinations between inputs and outputs. Seventeen hotels located in Portugal were evaluated, using data from the year 2024. The names and locations of the hotels will not be disclosed in this study. Four different models were considered, with constant or variable returns, and input or output orientation. The results revealed that the number of inefficient units is higher than the number of efficient units in almost all models. The models developed took into account all hotel units, revealing significant heterogeneity among the 17 units. Models I and III (variable returns to scale) classified the largest number of hotels as efficient, while Models II and IV (constant returns to scale) showed more inefficiencies.en
