Resumo(s)

This study is centered in the relational dynamics that man creates with the objects around him. A practical relationship, in the conviction that functionality is the main reason to establish the effort of inventing something that resolves the endless problems that man will encounter along its own evolution. Society as we know it, wouldn’t be possible without objects, and it’s exactly that relationship between man and the material world, made of artifacts, that will be analyzed here. Besides the functional value, the use that serves its own existence, objects also serve other purposes, other functions. It becomes the memory, the representation of something, of a moment, of an era. When that happens, it becomes also the contribution to a way of thinking. This work will analyze this relation, starting in the Industrial Revolution, moment chosen to represent the beginning of a way of understanding the project, relating to design. Paradigmatic moments will be also located and defined, when this relation is not only clear, but also represents significant ruptures with any previous discourses. On the other hand, this work will begin in England, because this is the most interesting place and period to begin with, expanding after to the United States of America and subsequently to the rest of the world, from that time to the present moment. The narrative will focus in specific moments that will serve better to illustrate the instruments and mechanisms that were born and developed to better promote design and material culture. From the artistic circles to the publishing of specialized magazines, to the main protagonists that, heading museums or scholar institutions, or independently from any organized circuits, were pivotal in the definition and evolution of the culture of design
