as dimensões disponibilidade, cumplicidade, preocupação e reciprocidade; 2) as
Serão discutidas as principais conclusões, limitações e potencialidades do presente
estudo, bem como sugestões para estudos futuros.
The main goal of this research project was to explore the relationships between grandparents and grandchildren, so it was composed by two phases. The first phase was the exploration of the phenomenon in study, whose main goal was to understand the main characteristics and dimensions of these relationships and the role played by family rituals, from the grandparent’s point of view. A qualitative method was employed based on data collected through focus groups with twenty grandparents and semi-structured individual interviews to three grandparentsgrandchildren dyads (N=26). The collected data was analyzed in the Nvivo 12 software, through a thematic analysis. The main results were: 1) in the grandparents-grandchildren relationships the dimensions of availability, complicity, concern and reciprocity stand out; 2) the main forms of interaction that occur between grandparents and grandchildren are playful moments, sharing stories and advices; 3) the grandparents role is characterized by affective, instrumental and intergenerational dimensions, where the functions of counseling and protection, tasks support and transmission of values and traditions stand out; 4) the feelings of satisfaction and joy and the companionship contribution are strengths of the grandparents role; 5) all the grandparents share family rituals with their grandchildren; 6) sharing special dates, vacations and weekends and fun times are the most common family rituals mentioned; 7) regarding the relationship dimensions, the grandparents and grandchildren perception are similar; 8) grandchildren mentioned more family rituals than grandparents. The most important conclusions obtained in this study are presented, including some of its limitations and potentialities, as well as suggestions for future studies.
