Abstract(s)
We live in a society characterized by the excessive provide of industrialized
products and the depersonalization of the objects that surround us. How to
bring a breath of freshness to the standardized reality and seek new
perspectives? Is it possible to rethink the consumption of industrial objects? The answer for the future may be in the past. Or rather, in the reunion of the past with the present. This work project proposes a curatorial look at a process that has been accentuated in recent decades – the connection between crafts and design –, through the exhibition “Talks through the Window: dialogues between crafts and design in Brazil and Portugal” (“Conversas à Janela: diálogos entre artesanato e design no Brasil e em Portugal”), designed for the Museum of the Brazilian House (Museu da Casa Brasileira), in São Paulo. The exhibition brings together decorative, artistic and utilitarian objects, produced in the last decade, using techniques of basketry, ceramics and textile art. The selection seeks to highlight the exchange of knowledge between artisans and designers and the emergence of a new generation of “craftsmen designers”. The exhibition also addresses the connections between Portugal and Brazil within the scope of manual crafting, handicrafts and, consequently, artisanal design.
