From Gottfredson’s (1981, 1996) developmental theory, this research addresses the issue of vocational development in childhood, during the first ten years of life. In this period, children are founded objectives, circumscribing the boundaries of social space of gender, and are firmed the conceptions of personal competency for the work and learning. The empirical study took a sample of children in the 4th year, 1st cycle of basic education and questionnaire were used. The results are convergent and systematic in the sense that children 10 years confined the occupational alternatives in a cognitive map governed by gender, and with little consistency factor of prestige. In the data also emerge that the children of this age, already show a sense of competency and planning for the future. The conclusions discuss the implications for practice, according to the concept of career education.
