The emergence of quantum technologies might cause a paradigm shift in our society and economy, impacting various industries (Kaku, 2023). This research project aims to study the social and economic impact of quantum technologies, particularly within the context of Portugal.
The research was conducted by combining evidence from the literature with semi-structured interviews with quantum technology experts. These interviews helped filling a gap regarding the impact of quantum technologies on Portugal's socioeconomic context. Key insights from this research include:
a)
The telecommunications sector stands at the forefront of quantum technology's impact.
b)
Industries reliant on optimization, such as finance, health, and pharmaceuticals, are likely to be significantly affected.
c)
Portuguese companies lack substantial preparation for emerging quantum technologies.
d)
Additionally, the integration of quantum technologies raises profound ethical considerations, necessitating comprehensive regulation and social re-evaluation.
