Este estudo argumenta que a Sports Policy da União Europeia, englobando nesta as decisões levadas a cabo pelas instituições da UE no âmbito da sua formulação, é um objeto de estudo relevante para as Relações Internacionais. Reconhecendo a relevância do futebol, o estudo foca-se em compreender as motivações por detrás do interesse da União Europeia no mesmo, e ainda como este foi incorporado na sua agenda política e que processos se desenrolam para criar um enquadramento legal e político para o futebol. O estudo foca-se ainda em referir como o futebol pode ser uma ferramenta de europeização, e argumenta que o poder transformativo da UE melhorou significativamente as condições da Governance do futebol europeu, tornando-a mais democrática, transparente, e acima de tudo, mais justa.
The study argues that the European Union Sports Policy, taking into consideration the decisions that were taken by the institutions in order to be able to produce a unified approach on sports is an important field of study for International Relations. Recognizing the importance of football, this study wishes to unveil the motivations behind the interest of the European Union in this specific sport, but also how it made it into its agenda and what policy-making processes are being used to create a legal and political framework for football. It explores how football is a reliable tool for Europeanization, and argues that the European Union’s transformative power has improved the Governance of European football, making it more democratic, transparent and above all fairer.
