dc.description.abstractINTRODUÇÃO: Entre outras medidas implementadas para assegurar a capacidade de resposta dos sistemas de saúde durante a pandemia de COVID-19, vários países europeus graduaram os finalistas do curso de medicina de modo a reforçar os seus recursos humanos disponíveis. OBJECTIVOS E METODOLOGIA: Um estudo transversal foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de caracterizar uma população portuguesa de estudantes de medicina relativamente à sua opinião quanto ao papel que poderiam estar a desempenhar durante a pandemia; ao seu conhecimento sobre COVID-19 e medidas de controlo de infeção; e ao impacto que a quarentena teve na sua vida diária. O estudo consistiu na elaboração de um questionário online, o qual foi partilhado com os estudantes de medicina dos anos clínicos entre 26 de Março e o fim de Maio de 2020. RESULTADOS: A pandemia foi percepcionada como uma situação séria por 99,88% (n = 802) dos estudantes e 70,73% (n = 568) consideravam poder estar a contribuir mais ativamente durante a mesma. Os estudantes reconheceram que a actividade em que seriam mais capazes de contribuir seria no reforço da linha telefónica nacional de saúde, embora uma percentagem considerável de estudantes se tenha considerado preparada para participar em actividades clínicas. Paralelamente, a vontade de contribuir para o combate à pandemia pareceu ser independente dos conhecimentos dos estudantes sobre COVID-19. DISCUSSÃO: Os conhecimentos demonstrados sobre COVID-19 e as falhas de conhecimento observadas em relação ao equipamento de proteção individual são reveladoras da necessidade de realizar ações de formação antes de integrar os estudantes nas actividades clínicas, caso tal venha a ser necessário. CONCLUSÃO: Os estudantes de medicina dos anos clínicos mostraram-se confiantes de que podem contribuir para atenuar a pressão sob a qual as instituições de saúde têm estado.pt_PT
dc.description.abstractINTRODUCTION: Among other policies aimed at ensuring the healthcare systems’ response capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic, many European countries graduated their final year medical students to reinforce the human medical resources available. OBJECTIVES AND METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was designed with the aim of characterising a Portuguese population of medical students in terms of their opinion on the role they could be taking in the fight against this pandemic, their knowledge on COVID-19 and infection control measures and the impact lockdown has had in their daily life. The study consisted in the development of an online questionnaire which was shared with medical students attending the clinical years of their degree from March, 26th until the end of May, 2020. RESULTS: The pandemic was perceived as a serious situation by 99,88% (n = 802) of students and 70,73% (n = 568) considered they could be actively contributing to tackle it. Students recognised that the activity in which they would be able to contribute the most would be by strengthening the national health telephone hotline. However, there was still a considerable percentage of students who considered themselves to be prepared to take part in clinical activities. In parallel, the will to contribute to the fight of the pandemic appeared to be independent of the students’ knowledge on COVID-19. DISCUSSION: The participants’ knowledge on COVID-19 and the observed gap in knowledge regarding personal protective equipment are revealing of the need for providing students with directed practical training before deploying them in clinical contexts, should this become necessary. CONCLUSION: Medical students attending the clinical years of their degree were confident that they can contribute to attenuate the strain under which health institutions have been.pt_PT
