Resumo(s)

This work was developed as part of the master’s degree in Geophysical Sciences at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, in collaboration with the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA). The main objective of this work was the use of seismic attributes as a tool to support the interpretation of seismic reflection data, to characterize and map geological structures associated with Neotectonics and fluid migration in the Algarve Basin, with a focus on the identification of faults and diapirs as potential fluid migration pathways. The methodology applied in this study was based on the interpretation of 3D seismic reflection data, integrating the concepts of seismic stratigraphy and the use of different seismic attributes, such as RMS Amplitude, Variance, Instantaneous Phase and Frequency, among others, which allowed the identification of discontinuities, seismic facies, diapiric structures, and amplitude anomalies associated with possible fluid presence. Five seismic units were identified, bound by four unconformities, reflecting distinct stages of basin evolution. Fault interpretation revealed the existence of different basin phases and complex structures associated with salt domes, confirming the importance of salt tectonics in the basin’s evolution. The interpretation of Bright Spots showed an asymmetry in their distribution: the shallowest ones are mostly associated with MTDs (Mass Transport Deposits) and the presence of organic matter in recent sediments, while the deeper ones indicate possible fluid migration from lower levels through faults, suggesting the potential existence of fluid migration and accumulation systems influenced by the interaction of tectonics, diapiric structures, and sedimentary processes. It was concluded that the basin presents high tectono-sedimentary complexity, marked by phases of rifting and compression. This work also demonstrated the importance of integrating seismic attributes as an essential tool for seismic interpretation, enabling better characterization and geological understanding of the basin.
