Appreciation of adult attachment styles, in one hand, and child social behaviour and competences at school, in other hand, have expanded dramatically in developmental research over the past several years. At the same time, mother’s attachment style, in particular, has emerged as a salient mediator of children’s competences at school. The aim of this study was to examine mother’s attachment style and its possible correlation with children’s social behaviour in the period of adaptation to school. The objectives of this study were threefold and entailed the following: H1) examination of the correlation between mother’s actual attachment style and children’s social behaviour as observed by teacher in the early period of adaptation to school, H2) examination of the relation between mother’s actual attachment style and her perception of the early relations maintained with her own mother, H3) examination of the relation between mother’s actual attachment style and her perception of his role as a mother. Ninety four predominantly middle-class mother-child pairs and child’s teacher residing in a urban, recent and renewed part of the city of Lisbon participated in this study. Mothers and teachers completed a number of questionnaires, adapted from Experience in Close Relationship, Relationship Questionnaire, and ACTeRS Teacher and Parent Form. The correlation examined in H1 was partially and significantly proved. Counter to expectations, both, H2 and H3 failed to significantly predict the established relations. However, interesting findings suggests clues between mother-girl relationship in the domains of Attention and Hyperactivity. Implications of the findings are discussed and suggestions for future research are provided.pt_PT
