Since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, the impact of the pandemic on the accommodation industry in Portugal has been significantly underestimated, and there is still no substantiated knowledge of the scenarios and effects of this crisis, but everything points to unprecedented repercussions in this industry. Therefore, this dissertation aims to study the short and long-term pandemic effects of COVID-19 in the accommodation industry in Portugal, contributing to the knowledge about the dynamic characteristics of family that run organizations and aiming to assess resilience and survival methods in the face of a crisis through the development of a well-structured conceptual model. The research questions were tested through a survey with data collected from a database of contacts provided by Informa D&B for companies in the accommodation sector. The 684 answers and the consequent results obtained, allowed for empirical evidence supporting the relationships between several characteristics of a family business (family orientation and socio-emotional wealth) and business characteristics (entrepreneurial orientation and business sustainability), but also to prove that these connections between these different characteristics can save a business from a disaster at a global level. This present study enabled a different approach to the topics investigated, highlighting the importance of family and entrepreneurship in family-oriented companies in the way they survive to periods of extreme crisis, always keeping as a main focus, the sustainability of the organization.
