Abstract(s)

This master's thesis aims to explore university scientific collections, analyzing osteology collections in national museological institutions. To achieve this goal, it was considered relevant to explore how museums view documentation and inventory processes, as well as their evolution over time, and the problems inherent in the lack of these procedures. In this context, we intend to reflect on the value and the historical, museological, scientific, and social roles of these collections, with emphasis on the Geosciences, as fundamental references for both the scientific community and society. Since the specimens that integrate scientific collections are part of authentic repositories of bio/geodiversity, an attempt is made to understand what value is attributed to them when there is no associated documentation capable of proving their relevance from a scientific point of view. Based on this premise, we intend to reflect on the relevance of inventory and documentation processes applied to the museum context, bringing as an example some of the Portuguese reference institutions that house natural history and science collections. For this purpose, brief field research was carried out, where the practices of documentation and preservation of osteological material adopted in three institutions were analyzed: the National Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Lisbon, the Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Porto and the Museum of Science of the University of Coimbra. Next, a case study is carried out with the purpose of proposing the elaboration of an inventory of a set of skulls belonging to the Museu de Geociências do Instituto Superior Técnico - Museu Décio Thadeu, following the current practices in this type of osteological material collections. Given its pedagogical and scientific functions and the need to safeguard the heritage that makes up the collection of this museum, which illustrates the history and memory of the institution itself, a plan of best practices and appropriate procedures for its preservation is also integrated here
