A psicoterapia tem sido definida na prática como um empreendimento verbal, que alcança as
suas metas por meios verbais (Wiener, 1997). Apesar da existência de outros dispositivos
enquanto alternativa, existe a crença de que, por ser baseada nas significações dos indivíduos
em questão, a terapia deve ser sempre baseada na utilização da linguagem verbal. No entanto,
a necessidade de comunicar de uma forma analógica (Watzlawick, Beavin & Jackson, 1967),
requere o uso de técnicas mais ativas e expressivas.
Através de um estudo exploratório qualitativo longitudinal, exploramos como os recursos
criativos, expressivos e dramáticos podem ser benéficos na terapia familiar e como se pode
proceder à integração da atividade artística na terapia. A investigação centra-se no caso de uma
família em acompanhamento por um terapeuta e uma encenadora num contexto específico,
neste caso num centro de terapia familiar – em terapia e num programa paralelo de educação
artística. Os dados foram recolhidos através de entrevistas semi-estruturadas e analisados
através da análise temática. Os temas identificados indicam a existência de duas linguagens
diferentes, e a análise aprofundada permitiu descrever um modelo, que, em vez de conciliar no
mesmo espaço as duas linguagens – de terapia e de educação artística – opta por separar os
espaços cuja família considera imprescindíveis. Outras questões relativamente à comunicação
são abordadas, e o modelo é renovadamente analisado através de diversas lentas, para gerar
pistas para a área da terapia familiar, bem como para outras áreas.

Even though there are other paths, there is this idea that therapy should always be based on verbal communication. However, our need for analog communication (Watzlawick, Beavin & Jackson, 1967) requires more active and expressive techniques. Through an exploratory, qualitative, and longitudinal study, we explore the way creative, expressive, and dramaturgical resources may be beneficial in family therapy and the way we could integrate artistic activities in therapy. This investigation is centered around a case study of a family accompanied by a therapist and a theatre director in a specific context, in this case in a family therapy center – in therapy as well as in an artistic education program. The data was obtained through a series of semi structured interviews and analyzed through thematic analysis. It suggests the existence of two different languages, and through a deeper analysis we describe a model that, instead of accommodating these two different languages – the therapeutic and the artistic languages – chooses to separate these spaces, which are considered essential to the family. Other issues related to communication are also discussed and the model is revised through many new lenses, to raise new questions to the family therapy area, as well as other areas.
