A arte esquemática é uma das expressões utilizadas pelas primeiras comunidades agro-pastoris, onde o sub-sistema simbólico sofreu uma profunda alteração em relação ao período paleolítico. No actual território Português existem vários núcleos de abrigos com arte esquemática pintada, cujas representações permitem um enquadramento em diversos períodos cronológicos através das suas características tipológicas e morfológicas. A localização e tipologia dos próprios abrigos são também reflexo dos parâmetros de antropização da paisagem de cada comunidade pré-histórica.
The schematic art is one of the expressions used by the first farmers/herders communities, where the symbolic sub-system has undergone a deep change compared to the Palaeolithic. In the Portuguese territory, there are several rock shelters with schematic painted art, whose typological and morphologic characteristics of the representations fits in several pre-historic periods. The localization and typology of the rock shelters is also the result of the humanization of the landscape by pre-historic communities.
