Abstract(s)
Jorge Borges de Macedo (1921–1996) was one of the most influential historians in Portugal during the second half of the 20th century. From a young age, his insatiable curiosity and openness to multiple fields of knowledge—history, philosophy, economics, geography, literature, art, among others—left their mark on the diversity of perspectives and the broad chronological and geographical scope of a body of work focused on the national historical experience. In the historian’s trajectory, one can note a movement from a special focus on the 18th century to a gradual broadening of interest in the more recent past, without neglecting earlier periods—from the 15th to the 17th centuries—with occasional forays into medieval times. This was accompanied by the adoption of an integrated conception of history—economic, social, political, diplomatic, and cultural—attuned to transnational connections and marked by a search for alternative approaches in relation to other historiographical interpretations circulating in the public sphere. This book is organized into two parts: 1) a polyhedral history—a Herculean metaphor particularly suited to the modus faciendi of Jorge Borges de Macedo; and 2) testimonies that, beyond their experiential dimension, also reflect on the theoretical foundations, practical application, and a legacy that endures to this day.
