dc.description.abstractJorge Borges de Macedo (1921-1996) foi um dos historiadores mais marcantes na segunda metade do século XX em Portugal. Desde a juventude, insaciável curiosidade e abertura a múltiplos campos do conhecimento (história, filosofia, economia, geografia, literatura, arte, etc.) deixaram sinais na diversidade de pontos de vista, bem como na abrangência cronológica e geográfica de uma obra centrada na experiência histórica nacional. Na trajectória do historiador, assinale-se um movimento que o levou da especial atenção ao século XVIII a um progressivo alargamento de interesse pelo passado próximo, sem esquecer, mais para trás, os séculos XV a XVII, com algumas incursões no tempo medieval. E a adopção de uma concepção de história integrada (económica, social, política, diplomática, cultural), atenta a conexões transnacionais, a par da procura de caminhos alternativos em relação a outras interpretações historiográficas difundidas no espaço público. Este livro organiza-se em duas partes: 1) uma história poliédrica, metáfora herculaniana particularmente adequada ao modus faciendi de Jorge Borges de Macedo e 2) testemunhos que, para além da dimensão vivencial, não esquecem a dimensão teórica, a prática e um legado que se prolonga até aos dias de hoje.
dc.description.abstractJorge Borges de Macedo (1921–1996) was one of the most influential historians in Portugal during the second half of the 20th century. From a young age, his insatiable curiosity and openness to multiple fields of knowledge—history, philosophy, economics, geography, literature, art, among others—left their mark on the diversity of perspectives and the broad chronological and geographical scope of a body of work focused on the national historical experience. In the historian’s trajectory, one can note a movement from a special focus on the 18th century to a gradual broadening of interest in the more recent past, without neglecting earlier periods—from the 15th to the 17th centuries—with occasional forays into medieval times. This was accompanied by the adoption of an integrated conception of history—economic, social, political, diplomatic, and cultural—attuned to transnational connections and marked by a search for alternative approaches in relation to other historiographical interpretations circulating in the public sphere. This book is organized into two parts: 1) a polyhedral history—a Herculean metaphor particularly suited to the modus faciendi of Jorge Borges de Macedo; and 2) testimonies that, beyond their experiential dimension, also reflect on the theoretical foundations, practical application, and a legacy that endures to this day.
