Faced with the degradation and devaluation experienced by many historic centers, which carry the heritage and history of cities and cultures, this work aims to enhance and revitalize the historic center of Lagos, in the Algarve, Portugal. By investigating current needs and proposing specific interventions, the goal is to prevent the neglect of these spaces, promoting urban rehabilitation and the preservation of local identity. Focusing on the old Misericórdia Hospital of Lagos and its adjacent areas, the proposal develops an integrated strategy that ranges from urban scale planning to detailed architectural design. Three main projects are presented: the transformation of the hospital into a community center, the creation of an archaeological park and open-air museum at the site of the old police station, and the construction of affordable housing at the waterfront and in the hospital area. These projects aim to revitalize the historic center by creating public spaces that promote social interaction and urban living, while respecting and incorporating the rich history of the site. The proposal for affordable housing seeks to combat gentrification and urban desertification, ensuring the retention of local residents and the inclusion of new inhabitants from different economic backgrounds. The methodology adopted combines a theoretical approach with practical design, involving documentary research, territorial analysis, and the development of architectural and urban solutions. The interventions are planned to improve urban mobility, create new spaces for socializing, and integrate historical and contemporary elements, promoting a more dynamic, just, and sustainable city. In summary, this work aims to contribute to the rehabilitation of the historic center of Lagos, preserving its cultural and historical heritage, and promoting social cohesion and quality of life for its inhabitants.
