Introduction: Teen pregnancy is considered a social problem. This study aims to understand how pregnant teenagers experience pregnancy regarding to maternal expectations about mother-infant interaction. Goals: To determine if maternal prenatal attachment and the presence of psychopathological symptoms are able to influence maternal expectations about mother-infant interaction. In addition, it will be important to assess the effect of maternal prenatal attachment in interaction with psychopathological symptoms upon maternal expectations about mother-infant interaction. Sample: Pregnant teenagers (N = 25) with at least 12 weeks of gestation and Portuguese nationality. Instruments: Sociodemographic and Clinical Questionnaire; Brief Symptom Inventory (Derogatis, 1993; Portuguese version by Canavarro, 1995); Maternal Prenatal Attachment Scale (Condon, 1993; Portuguese adaptation by Camarneiro & Justo, 2007, 2010) and the Maternal Expectations about Mother-Infant Interaction Questionnaire (Adaptation by Silva, 2019, based on the Inventory of Maternal Perception about the Infant's Intersubjectivity in the Mother-Infant Relationship of Carrulo de Sousa, 2016). Hypotheses: General Hypothesis 1: Pregnant adolescents’ Psychopathological Symptoms is expected to contribute for the explanation of the Maternal Expectations about Mother-Infant Interaction; General Hypothesis 2: Pregnant adolescents’ Prenatal Maternal Attachment is expected to contribute for the explanation of Maternal Expectations about the Mother-Infant Interaction; General Hypothesis 3: Pregnant adolescents’ Prenatal Attachment and Psychopathological Symptoms, together, do contribute significantly for the explanation of Maternal Expectations about Mother-Infant Interaction. Results: Psychopathological symptoms do not influence maternal expectations about mother-infant interaction. It was found that prenatal attachment has a significant impact on maternal expectations. And yet, maternal prenatal attachment and psychopathological symptoms, together, do influence maternal expectations about mother-infant interaction. Conclusion: This investigation underlines the importance of understanding pregnant adolescents’ maternal expectations and evidences the impact of maternal attachment and psychopathological symptoms on it.
