Abstract(s)
In the preservation and intervention of a sculpture, it is necessary to understand and acquire the general knowledge about the different treatment methods, as well as the understanding of its material and its limitations. In Pena National Palace storage room, in Sintra, there are three plaster models from the 19th century, made by D. Fernando II in collaboration with the sculptor Francisco de Assis Rodrigues. The replicas represent an equestrian statue of General Josiah Rantzaw and were in an advanced state of deterioration. It’s important to emphasize that negligence and lack of understanding of the importance of replicas can lead to deprived care of the works or even their disappearance. Due to a great concern of Pena National Palace, for the National Heritage, a proposal was made to intervene in these three models. The following master's project intended not only to understand the importance of replicas for the preservation of the sculptures, but also to conservate, give stability and restoring the true and real aesthetic of the three plaster models, so that they can be exhibited at the Pena National Palace. For this, a bibliographic survey was carried out in order to contextualize the replicas under study, later a Conservation and Restoration intervention was carried out. The intervention took place in the plaster sculpture collection of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, and the replicas in question were transported from Sintra to Lisbon. In the reconstitution of gaps in the plaster sculptures, a bronze model and two of the sculptures themselves were used as references. In addition to this bronze model, existing in the Pena National Palace, two other identical bronze models were discovered in the Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa. The reconstitution of gaps was carried out using silicone molds, always taking into account the corresponding model of each sculpture. In this way, the stability of the plaster sculptures was guaranteed, and a faithful esthetic was returned, according to the original intention of its creator.
