Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: São Tomé is nowadays, in the highly competitive landscape of the global economic market, a country that displays a plethora of shortcomings, both social and economic. The lack of opportunity, the weak industrialization, and the lack of variety in economic activities and outputs are some of the thoughest challenges that face the country in the coming decades. Its necessary to understand what is the role of the architect in this context, and in addition to the simple design of new relevant infraestructures, what kind of tools he has at his disposal to influence these communities. The modern city landscape is constituted by a vast array of different meanings, symbols and images. In addition to being a “dwelling”, the modern city also teaches how to “dwell”. In addition to housing interactions, it also teaches how to interact. With this in mind, we can infer that when the architect designs for the city, more than designing simple objects, he is also necessarily designing models of behaviour. At the core of this thesis is the exploration of the idea of the iconic building as an agent of social change that acts as a symbol, an object that operates on the collective memory itself. Assuming these ideas as the core of this work, all the urban and architectural design done in the context of this thesis had be justified not only by the urban intervention in and of itself, but also try to understand and justify the particularities of the sociological power wielded by the architect, while accounting for all the possible social and moral ramifications. Answering all these questions will be essential to find the most viable path of architectural intervention. To design a multifuncional iconic building that is able to (re)construct the fabric of the city itself, to (re)construct its very own image.
