Today, the Mouraria neighbourhood and the surrounding areas are places where a great deal of multiculturalism, faiths and religious confessions coexist, which necessarily makes this area very rich from a religious and sociological point of view. However, this confluence of faiths and cultures naturally creates areas of tension between the original and national residents and those who come to settle there or just as visitors. This project proposes the creation of an ecumenical complex with religious facilities in the Mouraria neighbourhood. When starting this project, I had to try to respect the site’s rich (cultural and religious) history and answer some questions that arose from the start: How can architecture intervene to mitigate or even eliminate sources of tension between people of different faiths and cultures living in the same neighbourhood? Could the creation of an aggregating building fulfil this function? And should this building include a religious temple as a centre of unity? What elements should this temple have as essential for the pursuit of the various cults (even if they are not simultaneous)? It was the answers to these questions that motivated the creation of this project. It is therefore proposed to build an Ecumenical Complex, responding to the lack of spaces dedicated to interreligious dialogue in Portugal. Religion and spirituality are very present in the life of this neighbourhood. Even so, such a facility will result in a greater stimulus for the population, seeking not only religious practice, but also the search for well-being and the promotion of healthy social coexistence among all. The aim of this complex is to promote religious and spiritual practice, but above all to develop an environment of respect and co-operation between different faiths. In this way, this project aims to help make Mouraria and its surrounding areas an example of harmony and peaceful coexistence, further enhancing its rich cultural and historical heritage.
