A museum's website is an extension of its physical counterpart: an online platform that enriches and enhances communication with its audience, aligned with its mission. This dissertation aims to understand the quality of the user experience (UX) of Portuguese museum websites in terms of their usability and accessibility. Taking three Lisbon-based foundation museum websites as a sample, a qualitative analysis was carried out on each one through remotely moderated usability tests carried out with five users from the target demographics for each case. Furthermore, we created a list of 30 accessibility checks, based on the international Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 level A, and applied it to the case studies, using both qualitative and quantitative meth-odology. We observed that the websites did not comply with 66.67% to 81.48% of the checks on the list created, as well as nine in the 11 accessibility criteria under study. In the usability tests, the most successful tasks, which the users found easier to accomplish, were related to preparing for a visit (identifying available exhibitions and looking for the price of a ticket) and the less successful were connected to looking for information about a museum’s artwork, with a success rate of 54% to 88% between the three case studies; we also observed that simple and clear language and content hierarchy were associated with greater ease when solving tasks. Finally, we present the identified problems and successful practices and propose solutions for each of the websites in study. We also point out recommendations for the optimization of the usability and accessibility of museum websites in general, as well as for future research in this field.
