The exhibition An Illustrated China: Chinese themes in the Library of the National Palace of Mafra was on display in the room attached to the Library of Mafra between January and April 2014, with its inauguration coinciding with the Colloquium Portuguese Readings of China of the 16th and 17th centuries: books, ideas and images at the origin of modern Sinology. The exhibition brought together around forty works dedicated to China that are scattered across different thematic sections of this magnificent historical library, organized according to a chronological-thematic principle. Translating the time when the bibliographic collection gathered at Casa da Livraria de Mafra was constituted, most of the titles presented – and which we reproduce here by making a selection of images as comprehensive as possible – correspond to works printed throughout the 18th century. This is a particularly relevant circumstance for anyone interested in the study of cultural interaction between East and West, since this period coincided with a growing European interest in China and with the consequent multiplication of editions of books, images and of maps relating to this part of eastern Asia.
