This research focuses on exploring top management intentions from Portuguese manufacturing industry, in adopting or developing reverse logistics, contributing to a circular economy. Circular economy is an emerging and relevant concept that it acts as an alternative to the dominant model of production and consumption, known as linear economy, that follows the flow "take-make-use-dispose". Considered conducive to a more sustainable initiative by manufacturing companies, the implementation of reverse logistics processes is considered especially useful for managing solid waste and reducing waste pollution. Reverse logistics has gradually gained importance for producing companies through environmental awareness, competitiveness and environmental regulations. However, there is lack of knowledge about the intentions of implementing these processes in the Portuguese manufacturing industry and what their main antecedents are. Through the Theory of Planned Behavior and a model of structural equations (SEM-PLS), the intentions determinants of 177 companies in the Portuguese manufacturing industry were analyzed. The results confirm that attitudes and perceived behavioral control of top managers, positively influence top managers intentions, however, subjective norms have proved to be a non-significant determinant in this context. In the present study, we also tried to extend the Theory of Planned Behavior, exploring potential barriers and facilitators of the cognitive antecedents of intentions. The results are indicative of the relevance of some of these barriers and facilitators for the intentions of reverse logistics adoption. Given the relevance of this theme and the low intentions of top managers to adopt reverse logistics, and based on the results found, some measures were suggested that may create conditions more favorable to managers of the national manufacturing industry to implement processes compatible with a more circular economy.
