Resultados: No total, 205 terapeutas ocupacionais participaram no estudo.
Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate the knowledge of Occupational Therapists on Palliative Care; to identify possible factors that influence the knowledge of Occupational Therapists on Palliative Care; to identify the need for improvement on basic and specialized training on Palliative Care for Occupational Therapists. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire was distributed to occupational therapists living in Portugal registered with Portuguese Association of occupational therapists and with interest group of Occupational Therapy of a social network between October of 2016 and February of 2017. The questionnaire used to evaluate occupational therapists’ knowledge on Palliative Care was designed by the authors in accordance with literature review. To measure the outcomes it was used the SPPS for statistical analysis. Results: In total 205 Occupational Therapists participated in the study. Occupational Therapists answered correctly to half of the questions (49,95%) showing that their knowledge on Palliative Care is average. Palliative Care principles and communication are the dimensions of Palliative Care in which Occupational Therapists presented better knowledge. On the other hand, the knowledge of symptoms’ control and care at end of life is below average. 60,5% of occupational therapists consider their own knowledge as below average and classify the role of occupational therapists on Palliative Care as very important (53,7%) or extremely important (36,6%). Conclusion: Although Occupational Therapists consider their knowledge below average, the results of the present study showed that their knowledge on Palliative Care is in general average. Occupational Therapist’s awareness for this area of care might be adequate for people with Palliative Care needs.
