Artisanal weaving is a topic that deserves research, for by studying the fabrics that were once produced in homemade weaving, an often-solitary activity, and in which practical need and the possibility of creating culture and identity merged, we can recover the history of a people and preserve its memory, knowledge and wisdom, which constitute the main axis of any cultural identity. The historic and scientific documentation about this specific subject is very scarce, and it is therefore of great importance to identify, gather, organize, and preserve these techniques. With this research we aim to collect and register the artisanal weaving techniques used in Madeira as well as the treatment processes of the raw materials, namely flax and wool, and analyse from a social and technical point of view the textiles that were once produced in Madeira Island, identifying different patterns, design, colours, etc. We will seek information from the existing bibliographic sources and mostly to the few still existing testimonies which will come from the weavers, who are the most significant keepers of this knowledge and know-how. As a result of the collection, to be able to create new and contemporary textile samples, revitalizing Madeiran textiles from a technical, cultural and identitary perspective, to create new textile products based on traditional weaving, preserving and valuing artisanal work.
