In Portugal, the Registo Nacional do Testamento Vital (RENTEV), with official legal status since July of 2014, provides individuals the opportunity to control over life-sustaining care and treatments in the eventuality of becoming physical and/or mentally incompetent. However, RENTEV lacks a thorough review of its impact in the Portuguese society during its first semester of existence. We conducted a study evolving 366 individuals (33 Priests, 157 Doctors and Medical Students and 176 patients), aiming to understand the impact of RENTEV in Portugal. We also had the purpose to suggest interventions to promote the use of Advance Directives and also for educational interventions. Three questionnaires were created (one for each group), which were sent by e-mail, self-administrated online, during a three month period. Data were collected anonymously and analyzed using the statistical package STATA 13.0. Throughout the analysis of the content of the surveys, we conclude that the number of registrations in this first semester of RENTEV was lower than expected. Even though 69,67% of individuals revealed that they already knew about RENTEV, 63,11% rated their knowledge as insufficient. The evidence shows that the combination of television shows/leaflets and repeated conversations in clinical visits is the most effective method of educating patients.
