This dissertation aims to analyse, through a comparative methodology, the novels Veromar (2019), by Dina Salústio and A Vénus Crioula (2021), by Vera Duarte. The approach chosen highlights the centrality of women’s bodies in both literary works and therefore entails a theoretical framework that combines feminist and gender studies with postcolonial studies, particularly in relation to Portuguese colonialism. The novels selected are part of contemporary Cape Verdean literature and will also be examined within that lens, as well as contextualized in the broader group of African Countries with Portuguese as an official language (PALOP). The analysis will also seek to establish parallels with previous works by both authors. The main theme explored across these novels is how the female body is represented by the women themselves and its potential for resistance, while also highlighting the countless circumstances of violence to which these bodies are frequently subjected.
