Terapeutas portadores de deficiência : o impacto nos clientes : um estudo exploratório

O presente estudo foi delineado com o intuito de perceber, no domínio da
psicoterapia realizada por profissionais portadores de deficiência, qual o im pacto da sua
deficiência nos futuros clientes de um a prim eira consulta de terapia.
O objectivo da escolha deste tem a de investigação foi explorar um a área com
dim inutas publicações científicas, e compreender a percepção das pessoas face a um
terapeuta com características físicas diferentes. Enquadra-se nos objectivos da tese
poder igualmente partir desses dados para trabalhar eventuais questões de estereótipos
associados à diferença. Finalmente, pretendeu-se equacionar ainda estratégias possíveis
para evitar ou dim inuir a inferiorização, desqualificação ou discriminação destes
profissionais, criando as melhores condições para eficácia no processo terapêutico.
A investigação efectuada integrou três estudos exploratórios com três am ostras e
m etodologias diferentes: a análise documental de três biografias de psicoterapeutas
portadores de deficiência, um inquérito por internet a um a am ostra aleatória da
população e um a entrevista estruturada a um a psicóloga clínica portadora de deficiência
física.
Os resultados incluem perspectivas m istas e por vezes contraditórias, quer de
preconceitos e estereótipos associados a certo tipo de deficiência, quer de ausência
desses estereótipos e até mesm o de percepção de vantagem da vivência da deficiência
para o processo psicoterapêutico. Os dados recolhidos incluem ainda, na perspectiva das
pessoas da amostra, o elencar de áreas em que os psicoterapeutas deficientes podem ser
eficientes e, até eficazes, bem com o a confirmação de que somente a deficiência motora
perece reunir o consenso dos clientes de que esta afectação não lhes diminui a
capacidade de eficácia e realização profissional.
This study was designed w ith the objective o f understanding, in the field o f psychotherapy carried out by professionals with disabilities, w h a t is the im pact o f their disability in the future custom ers o f a first therapy session. The purpose o f choosing this research topic was to explore an area w ith few scientific publications, and to understand the perception o f individuals towards a therapist w ith different physical characteristics. Another m ain objective o f this research is to work w ith stereotypes associated with difference. Finally, we sought to further consider possible strategies to prevent or reduce the disqualification or discrimination against these professionals, creating the best conditions for effectiveness and efficacy in the therapeutic process. Research included three exploratory studies with three different samples and methodologies: a docum ent analysis o f three biographies o f psychotherapists with disabilities, an Internet survey to a random sample of the population and a structured interview to a clinical psychologist w ith a physics disability. Results show mixed and sometimes contradictory perspectives, both o f prejudices and stereotypes associated with certain types o f disabilities or the absence o f these stereotypes, and even the perceived advantage o f disability to the psychotherapeutic process. The data collected also detailed the perspective o f the subjects on the delineation o f areas where the disabled psychotherapists are considered to be effective and even efficient. It also involved the shared perception and consensus from the potential clients that only m otor disabilities do not dim inish the capacity o f the therapist to be effective and to achieve professional realization.
