Abstract(s)
In recent years there have been changes in the family that have had an impact on children. In Portugal, between 2011 and 2021, according to data from the National Statistics Institute Census, there was an increase of 99,528 single-parent families. Single parent families face specific challenges and difficulties, partly impacted by the non-residency of the elements of the parental couple. Family conflict can assume special relevance following marital separation. Parental conflict has impacts on the welfare of children and youth. The CAFAP are a specialized support service for families with children and youth. Through a exploratory study, based on interviews (focus group and individual) to CAFAP technicians, we aimed to understand the role of those Centers, in the intervention with single parent families, in parental conflict situations, and what are the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of that intervention. The results suggest, regarding parental conflict, that there are different types (conflicts related and non-related to parenting), enhancing and protective factors, and impacts on children and youth. There seems to be a growing relevance and need for CAFAP intervention, with single parent families, in parental conflict situation, and diverse factors interfering on the results. On the other hand, the SWOT analysis results suggest the existence of threats, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, in that intervention. State and family play a crucial role in the promotion of the welfare and development of children and youth, and the results of the study suggest the need for cohesive implicit and explicit family policies.
