uterina, a tetania puerperal, a metrite e a mastite.
ABSTRACT - REPRODUCTIVE EMERGENCIES IN THE BITCH - Reproductive emergencies are common conditions in small animal practice, being their favorable outcome related with a quick diagnosis and intervention. Reproductive emergencies in the bitch include dystocia, pyometra, uterine prolapse, uterine torsion, hipocalcemia, metritis and mastitis. This dissertation displays and analyses the data related to reproductive emergencies in bitches, collected at Hospital VeterinĂĄrio Montenegro between September 1st 2009 and February 28th 2010. These data shows that 36,2% of the bitches over 6 months of age presented to the practice during this period were already spayed. In the intact bitches, 29 reproductive emergencies were diagnosed and 24 of those required hospitalization. Reproductive emergencies were the third cause leading to the hospitalization of female dogs (12,4%), demonstrating their relevance in small animal practice, despite the increasing performance of elective ovariohysterectomy e cesarean sections. Pyometra is the most frequent and important uterine disease in the bitch, being the most commonly observed emergency in this study (62,0%), followed by dystocia (20,8%) and hipocalcemia (7,0%). Only one case (3,4%) of uterine prolaplse, post-partum metritis and mastitis was observed and no uterine torsions were registered. Since the data reported here relates to a relatively shot period of time, it would be rather interesting to perform further studies in a broader timespan, in order to achieve a high number of cases and establish further inferences.
