Resumo(s)

The creative freedom in educational thinking: inquiry into the artistic scholar context of Viseu intends to investigate some of the historical and contemporary definitions of the term ‘creative freedom’ in its relationship with the field of education. To this end, it seeks to understand how the term ‘creative freedom’ has been discussed and defined by several authors (with greater focus from the XIX century onwards), and the ways through which the conceptions of ‘creative freedom’ have been changing over time and shaping the educational thought and, above all, the ways of thinking about artistic education. In addition to the mapping of theories and authors of the history of education (and art education), this dissertation seeks to create a dialogue with various contexts and educational models, leading to current reflections on the paradigms that the ‘school’ of our times invoke. In this sense, this research aims to find out – through a case study that focuses on the geographical area of the District of Viseu – the ways in which some agents and educational institutions in the field of Arts and Culture tend to think about the concept of creative freedom. However, it should be emphasized that this dissertation does not intend to present a definitive or totalitarian answer to the problem of the definition of ‘creative freedom’. The main purpose is, first of all, to inquire about our own representations of ‘freedom’ and ‘creativity’ as goals to achieve in art education, and as driving forces (in themselves) of educational thought. In this research we present two interviews to two personalities (David Justino and José Pacheco) that, in some ways, exemplify two shades of contemporary educational thought. In addition to the historical mapping and interviews, two surveys were implemented in the municipality of Viseu: the first directed to the ‘formal’ artistic education institutions and the second to the ‘informal’ and ‘non-formal’ art education organizations, covering teachers, students, artists and members linked to these various institutions and organizations. The results of these surveys are intended to reflect on the term ‘creative freedom’ as a mirror (itself) of the current reality in the municipality of Viseu where different actors of the artistic education and also the opinions and general needs that emerge in the field of ‘arts’ are in confront. Finally, a list of ‘informal’ and ‘non-formal’ organizations of educational scope in the field of the arts will be supplied, in order to establish a representative universe (though not exhaustive regarding the total reality) of the ‘artistic’ field of Viseu
