Resumo(s)
The current work aims to reflect upon relevant issues about illustration and specific characteristics of this kind of visual communication as a means of social criticism. In this sense, it is essential for this research to analyse and compare various approaches, expressions and imaginaries, created by different authors about the same topic. Having the subject of the domestic violence as the main focus of this work, the first part of the research involves the analysis of several examples of illustrations about this social issue, applied in graphic supports. These examples, are a result of the research and selection amongst the national and international context, chronologically organized and historically
referenced. Parallel to the images’ study, we analyse the different media and the strategies used to spread the message. The will to develop a viable and achievable practical intervention work, led us to search for a real context by contacting an association that works with domestic violence, and led us to develop other aspects connected with illustration, such as media, printing
options and dissemination strategy. As a consequence, part of this thesis focuses on the practical work – illustrated campaign against domestic violence – required to reflect upon the creative process and to expose the different aspects and options that have been implemented. It gives relevance to the analysis of the illustrations that are done through drawing, considering its approach to the subject, its expression and imaginary
